Founded by Cyrus the Great, the Persian Empire was the largest the world had yet known. His dynasty, the Achaemenids, ruled an area stretching from the Balkans to the borders of India. The empire was well-organized and exceptionally fair by the standards of the day. Despite two major setbacks against the Greeks in 490 BC and 480-479 BC, the Persian Empire endured until its total conquest by Alexander the Great. The coinage struck in the western parts of the empire (Asia Minor and the Levant) is some of the most beautiful and captivating of the ancient world. Drawing from Greek artistic and religious themes, Persian coins often feature legends in Aramaic script, the lingua franca of the vast empire.
