Roman Republic. Time of the Second Punic War. Anonymous AE (Bronze) uncia. Mint of Rome; struck 217-215 BC. VF; attractive coin struck at the moment of Rome's greatest peril, right around the Battle of Cannae (2 August 216 BC), in which approximately 90% of the 86,000-man Roman army was either killed or captured by the Carthaginians under Hannibal. Nevertheless, Rome lived to fight another day.
