The Roman historian Suetonius wrote his famous Lives of the Twelve Caesars in 121 AD, during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. In his marquee work, Suetonius chronicled the first twelve men to exercise sole rule over Rome. The first subject, Julius Caesar, is technically not considered an emperor, but his influence was so monumental that he lent his name to each of his successors. The remaining 11 are the first emperors, from Caesar Augustus to Domitian (d. 96 AD). Suetonius' writing style is part of the reason the work remains very popular today; he was fond of recounting gossip and rumor, and his work can be described as sensationalist at times. Nevertheless, the Twelve Caesars remains an excellent character study of the first twelve men that ruled the vast Roman world.
