Roman Republic. Time of the First Triumvirate. Marcus Junius Brutus, moneyer and future assassin of Caesar AR (Silver) denarius. Mint of Rome; struck 54 BC. Choice Fine; important type in which Brutus invoked his storied family's legacy in throwing off tyranny and restoring liberty to the Roman people - his ancestor Lucius Junius Brutus's overthrow of the last Roman king Tarquin the Proud in 509 BC. This type, which stressed the importance of the idea of libertas to Brutus and his family, foreshadowed his assassination of the dictator Caesar ten years later.
